Actinver modernizes its applications with microservices and an API layer

Grupo Financiero Actinver needed to streamline and strengthen the bank's applications for end users, without sacrificing security and while improving availability, as the basis for a comprehensive open banking strategy. With Anthos and Apigee, Amarello enabled a microservices architecture and an API layer that exposes the services of its core systems in a simple, secure and scalable way.

In short

Grupo Financiero Actinver is a Mexican company dedicated to investment advisory since 1994. It has more than 170,000 clients and more than 469 billion pesos under custody; its business units include a bank, a brokerage house, a leasing company and a corporate unit.

To prepare for a comprehensive open banking strategy, the challenge was clear: streamline and strengthen the bank's applications without sacrificing security and while improving availability. Amarello's support was crucial, from enabling Apigee to expose services to Anthos for modernizing the applications into microservices.

01 · The problem

Monolithic applications versus an open banking strategy

Actinver is an organization that always thinks about how to deliver value to its clients, innovating and growing. The next stage required preparing for open banking.

  1. 01

    Agility without sacrificing security

The bank's applications for end users had to release features faster, with the security a financial institution demands.

  2. 02

    Availability

The new architecture had to improve service availability, with proactive monitoring and a modern disaster recovery plan.

  3. 03

    Exposing the core systems

Open banking requires exposing services from the core backend systems in a simple, secure and scalable way, with governance over who accesses what.

02 · How we solved it

Anthos for the microservices and Apigee as the API layer

  1. 1

    Microservices architecture with Anthos

The implementation of Anthos on-prem allowed the platform to be deployed in a scalable and robust microservices architecture, with benefits such as security, proactive monitoring and a modern disaster recovery plan.

  2. 2

    API layer with Apigee

Apigee, as the API layer, made it possible to expose the services of the core backend systems in a simple, secure and scalable way, with access governance for each consumer.

03 · The benefit for the client

Reusable APIs, faster releases and a path to the public cloud

From monoliths to APIs

  • Actinver began migrating its monolithic applications to reusable, scalable APIs.

Faster releases

  • A considerable improvement in release times for new features.

Governance and monitoring

  • A substantial improvement in access governance for its core systems and continuous monitoring of its applications.

Foundation for the public cloud

  • The new architecture paved the way for a public cloud strategy later on.
  • The case published by Google Cloud reports that the share of response time attributable to transactional systems went from 90% to 10%.
